NEW: YouTube videos in the virtual classroom!!!

Today we can fulfill a wish of many online teachers: finally, you can play videos in the virtual classroom! And this is how it looks like, enjoy our little video clip!

How it works: step by step
Note: To use this new video feature, it is necessary to upload a video to YouTube. It is possible to present a video in public, so anyone can find and watch it. Or you can set your video “not listed”, so people can watch the video only if they have the link. This setting is perfect for videos that you do not want to spread on YouTube but you want to present in your online course on edudip. NOTE: The link of a private video won’t work in the virtual classroom, but the possibility of unlisted videos is very safe as long as you do not publish the video link.

1. There’s a new YouTube button that the moderators will quickly discover in the upper right of the virtual classroom. Clicking this button opens a window where you can insert a YouTube video link. So you copy the link of a video on YouTube and insert it in the edudip room. Press the button to load the video and you come to the second view.

2. The video has been loaded. Now you can see the title, description and a thumbnail of the video. The loading bar in the center of the window is very interesting, because it shows how far the video has loaded for your participants. When it has become completely green, all participants are ready and the video can be started for all of them without charging problems. The only one, who can do this, is the moderator by pressing the “Play” button at the bottom in this view.

3. In the whiteboard appears a video window on a black background to all participants as well as the presenters and the video starts playing. While the moderator can rewind and forward the video on the timeline, the participants will only see the video image without any options, so the moderator has full control. This also applies to the area in which you can pause the video and adjust the video resolution etc. The moderator can stop the video for all, mute it and change the resolution and size, so the video will be shown almost in full size of the whiteboard.
Note: The resolution of a video is essential for the display size. A video with a poor resolution and a bad quality can be very grainy as a large format. If you choose the full-screen mode, you should first put the resolution as high as possible.

Below the typical YouTube window, there are still more options, such as to synchronize the video. Why you have to synchronize? Even though the video is pre-loaded to all participants, it is depending on the internet connection and processor power if there is a delay of a few milliseconds, which is quite normal. Differences of some seconds are due to the local computing environment, but this is no problem. To make sure that everybody views exactly the same again, the moderator can “synchronize” the video to bring all to the same exact spot of his own video. But participants can also synchronize their videos by themselves, i.e. if the video is stopping or one is not sure whether viewing the same as the others, the participant can synchronize with the moderator’s video.

Einfach super!!!
